Tattoo Removal

Essence Medical's laser tattoo removal process utilizes SharpLight's Q-Switch laser setting to shatter the pigments of your tattoo. The pigments are then disposed of by your body through your lymphatic system over the course of several weeks causing the tattoo to fade substantially and in many cases with adequate treatment completely disappear.

Laser tattoo removal works with your body to dispose of the tattoo. Each treatment session helps to break up the tattoo, but it will take time for your body to dispose of the pigments. It's not uncommon to see the tattoo begin to fade after just one treatment, however each patient's body reacts differently.

Once a pigment has been effectively shattered and expelled by your body's lymphatic system that pigment of course would not return. So once all of your treatment sessions are complete and your body has fully disposed of the pigments you can expect what remains (if anything) to remain as is or to even further fade over time with age.

While many tattoo removal services are restricted to removal of solely black ink, the Sharplight laser that we use for tattoo removal at Essence Medical is capable of effectively working on tattoos of all colours, shapes, and sizes. While not all tattoos can be fully removed, they can all be substantially faded and our success rate with near full and full removal is very high.

All medical and cosmetic procedures come with a degree of risk. Laser tattoo removal is one of the safer options, but minor side effects can include skin colour changes, infection, and scarring (more on that in the next question). The number of treatment sessions required to substantially fade or remove your tattoo will depend on the size, age and detail of the tattoo itself. As part of your free consultation, our staff will assess your tattoo as well as ask a number of key questions to help determine how many treatment sessions are likely to be required. However, in nearly all cases more than 1 treatment session is required to see dramatic improvements regardless of the age, size or detail of the tattoo.

Typically if you could tolerate the discomfort associated with getting the tattoo, you can tolerate any discomfort associated with the removal treatment process. While most removals can be done without assistance, in some cases our team member may offer to administer a numbing agent prior to beginning treatment. After each session it is not uncommon for the treated area to feel sore and to be mildly swollen.

All tattoo removal methods have the potential of leaving minor scarring in the treated area, however laser tattoo removal is considered one of the least likely to do so. Our trained staff works with precision and care to further minimize the chances of scarring. Patients are also advised not to pick at the treated area after each treatment as this behaviour can often be a contributing factor as to whether or not a scar forms.
