Hair Removal

As the name suggests, laser hair removal involves the use of a concentrated beam of light to remove unwanted body hair more permanently and less painfully than other common hair removal methods. The specially designed laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. Then process then uses heat to damage the hair follicles within the skin inhibiting or substantially delaying future hair growth.

Every patients response to laser hair removal treatment varies. However, after a single session it is expected to see hair removal from the target area. It will however take a number of sessions for regrowth to be properly inhibited or slowed. Maintenance sessions after the initial treatment plan may also be required to help ensure the area remains hair free long-term. 

Laser hair removal is not recommended for anyone that is pregnant, taking certain medications (such as acne treatment), has raised scars on the treatment area, has herpes in treatment area, has or have had skin cancer, or anyone with a bleeding disorder. General best practices after a laser hair removal treatment session include avoiding too much direct sunlight, not using a tanning bed for a minimum of 6 weeks, and using sunscreen daily if you are expected to be exposed to any direct sunlight.

No, laser hair removal requires a series of treatments. The number of sessions depends on your skin type, hair location and the texture of your hair among other factors. In addition to the initial treatment set, patients are also recommended to return for occasional maintenance treatments to help ensure the target area remains hair free long-term. Our staff will always assess your situation and give an educated estimation of how many treatments are needed.

As part of your initial consultation with our staff we will guide you through a number of best practices prior to the first treatment. However, general best practices include:

• Avoiding a sunburn or tan

• Shaving the target area the day before treatment (in most cases)

• Avoiding other hair removal methods (waxing, plucking, electrolysis) 4 weeks prior to laser treatment.

Generally laser hair removal is a gentle, pain-free procedure, however potential minor side effects include temporary skin irritation (discomfort, redness, swelling) and pigmentation changes.
